Biography

Azusa Seyama was born in Japan in 1976 and began her ballet training there, which she continued from 1994 at the North Carolina School of the Arts in the United States. There, Azusa also accepted her first engagement at Ballet Austin in Texas and was subsequently engaged by various dance companies in the USA and Japan. In 1999, she continued her studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and became a member of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in 2000. She performed in a total of 27 pieces and took part in six world premieres. She can also be seen in Pedro Almodóvar's film Talk To Her (2002) and in Wim Wenders' film PINA (2011). In Wuppertal, she acts as rehearsal director and is involved in rehearsing Bausch works for other companies for the Pina Bausch Foundation, including Staatsballett Berlin, Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich and Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp. In 2014, she choreographed for the Saitama Gold Theater in Japan and danced in the Fabien Prioville Dance Company's production time for us. Since 2019, Azusa has been working with the Akram Khan Company and Alan Lucien Øyen as a rehearsal director and dancer.
Since the 2024/25 season, she has been the artistic assistant to the director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
